It is way to similar to all the about-super-heroes tv series. I am missing some depths that are not expected in tv series but more then necessary in books.

I was excpecting so much more. The story has a lot of unexplained angles, like the author thought it's enough to give some vage descriptions and wrap it all in fog and mystery to hide the flaws and decept the reader. Well it was not enough, i saw right trough it and i didn't like it.

Way to cheezy and shallow for my taste. And don't you swirl the "childrens book" flag in front of me, there are a lot of childrens books out there with far better plots and charakterisations. So if it's for children it doesn't mean it has to be so ...ah well, never mind. I did read it through, so that's why it got 3 stars.Although i do think i wasted my time.

I rarely decide to write a review before i finish a book, so this is one of those rare moments.
It usually happens when i am disappointed by the book, so after some time reading it, i just can't go on anymore. This however is not the case.
Quite opposite! I am very thrilled by this story, so much that i want to share it with all of you as soon as possible. And that "soon" is about 50% of the book, so far i have read till today. I am sure i will finish it in a day or two and i am sure that my opinion of the book won't change because i like it so much already.

You will be happy to know that this is a 5 books series (more books to enjoy, yay! ) and that all 5 are already written, we just have to wait for the last two to be translated in English as the books are written in Russian. And i must say the translation is done excellent - you will not even notice it's not the original.
The Books are MMO related and exceptionally well written.
If you never played a Multiplayer online game or any RPG game you might be kind of lost and confused in all the terminology and game psychology so to say.
But if you did experience this kind of gaming, be prepared for a lot of fun!
The other so far published books are The Clan and The Duty.
Here is a bit more info about it from Amazon and if you read the book as well, please leave a comment how did you like it.

"D. Rus is a young Russian author whose books took the Russian
literary market by storm in 2013. AlterWorld - the first novel of his
Play to Live series - made him a bestselling author overnight as critics
now credit him with single-handedly creating a new science fiction
genre: LitRPG.

Set in the virtual reality of MMORPG - Massively
Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games - his books tell stories of real
people who'd become stuck in the game and are forced to follow its rules
while preserving their intergrity and fighting to make their new world a
better place.

The five books of the series have created a huge
following as more authors followed suit, making LitRPG the latest
bestselling Russian genre that merges science fiction, fantasy and
gaming conventions. D. Rus has been nominated for Start, one of Russia's
prestigious literary prizes for the best debut science fiction novel.

The
first three novels of the Play to Live series - have been translated
into English, and talks are under way to have the rest of the series
published on Amazon."
I wish writers would write a reminder about previous sequels on every next book in the series..
It
happens to me often that i forget many things from the previous books
and this fact lessens the amount of sequel-reading-enjoyment.

This third and probably last (or not?) sequel was excellent and the only thing i have to complain about
is
that it has some amount of unnecessary words. I think the book could
stay amazing and wouldn't loose any of it charm with even 1/3 less of
content. But i just skipped reading them, so we are ok.
And here is the synopsis from Goodreads:

"By way of a staggering
deception, Karou has taken control of the chimaera rebellion and is
intent on steering its course away from dead-end vengeance. The future
rests on her, if there can even be a future for the chimaera in
war-ravaged Eretz.

Common enemy, common cause.

When
Jael's brutal seraph army trespasses into the human world, the
unthinkable becomes essential, and Karou and Akiva must ally their enemy
armies against the threat. It is a twisted version of their long-ago
dream, and they begin to hope that it might forge a way forward for
their people.

And, perhaps, for themselves. Toward a new way of living, and maybe even love.

But
there are bigger threats than Jael in the offing. A vicious queen is
hunting Akiva, and, in the skies of Eretz ... something is happening.
Massive stains are spreading like bruises from horizon to horizon; the
great winged stormhunters are gathering as if summoned, ceaselessly
circling, and a deep sense of wrong pervades the world.

What power can bruise the sky?

From
the streets of Rome to the caves of the Kirin and beyond, humans,
chimaera and seraphim will fight, strive, love, and die in an epic
theater that transcends good and evil, right and wrong, friend and
enemy.

At the very barriers of space and time, what do gods and monsters dream of? And does anything else matter?"
A Draw of Kings is a great ending to an amazing Fantasy series that rests now on my favorite shelves. Like the two previous books this one didn't disappoint either. The world building, the characters, the story - everything is deep, thorough, full and rich even complicated at times.
It is full of action and it hardly ever or even never drags away.

The kingdom of Illustra is on the breeches of war.And the kingdom still hasn't find there king. The one who is supposed to fight for his kingdom and die saving it.But whenever they cast the lots, they get the same results-Errol and Liam. Both names.
So who will be the next king?

Errol Stone's adventures continue with a lot of suspense action and plot twists that kept me on edge and guessing until the very end.
I gave it four instead of five stars just because at moments i felt a bit lost as things tended to get overcomplicated.

But i really enjoyed this series and it's very much worth recommending!
Here is the summary from Goodreads:
""Their journey to Merakh
should have made Errol and his companions heroes of the realm. Instead,
much is changed on their return. In the wake of the king’s death, Duke
Weir is ruling the country–and his intentions are to marry Adora to
bring an heir.
With Errol and the others imprisoned and the identity
of the rightful heir to the throne still hidden in secrecy, Illustra is
on the verge of civil war–and at growing risk from the armies of Merakh
and Morgol.
A dangerous mission to free Errol succeeds, but the
dangers facing the kingdom are mounting with every passing moment. The
barrier has fallen, ferals are swarming toward the land, and their
enemies draw near. Will the revelation of Illustra’s next true king come
in time or will all be lost?

I was so happy when i found out about this new series, because herBlack Magician trilogy
is on the top of my favorite books.
So i am very thankful to the Orbit publisher for providing me the book.

In this story we actually follow to story's. One is about Tyen, the magic and archeology student
and the second is about Rielle the daughter of a good-standing dye-works family.

And this to stories are very different, and they never meet each other, never intercept. Ah well, maybe they will in the second book.

Anyway, the stories even happen in different countries and the only similarity is one big problem they have.
Namely, they are running out of magic.

In one country they use it as fuel for different kind of machines so they spend it a lot and fast and in the other country they don't spend as much but
that's because only priests are allowed to use it.

There is romance, there is action, there are secrets and gossip, there is friendship and betrayal, there are so many things happening!

The world building and the characterization is very advanced and thorough, i was completely engrossed in this fantastic story
and couldn't let it go all the 500+ pages.

It all felt really true and believable- the dialog, the social interactions, the mean enemies and the not so flawless friends.
Trudi Canavan again proved us she is a seasoned and talented author and she definitely has an enormous imagination and knows very well what she is doing.
It is smart and very well written so i definitely recommend it to all the fantasy fans who like to have in a fantasy book a bit more beside just swords, battles dragon and spells:)

This is the third and last part in the trilogy, and i must say i relay liked it.The writing and the style is good and similar to the previous two books.Lev Grossman made yet again a fantastic, rich and colorful adventure for us to enjoy.I wonder sometimes where do writers like him get such a never-ending imagination.

Quentin Coldwater found out that the land in his favorite fantasy novels was actually real so he traveled (who wouldn't) there and had many quests and adventures with his friends.
It did remind me a bit of the The Chronicles of Narnia serial.

He is a very complicated character - sometimes a bit spoiled, very often a great dreamer, definitely a sensitive soul, and a brave and unexpected hero.
Through all three books we can follow him growing from a childish teenagers ( who got on my nerves more then one time)
to an adult, experienced magician who participated in many battles but still didn't loose his fate in wonders and fantasy.
The Magician's Land wraps up most of the loose ends from previous books and still keeps you on edge and reading through the night.
A nice and fulfilling conclusion to a beautiful trilogy.
Darynda Jones is a writer that has such a great skill for creating humorous and clever
dialogs between her characters that you can be sure to have a good laugh reading her series.

This latest installment of her Charley Davidson series is action pact, funny and hot like
There will be some major revelations, some moments where you just have to laugh out laud,
some very hot and spiced scenes ( every page on which Reyes appears is hot and spiced is it not ;) )
a lot of mystery, great friendship, romantic moments, heartbreak minutes, and everything else that we are used to get delivered by Darindas skillful writing.
And of course a sweet and intriguing ending, just to makes as wish for the next book to read as soon as possible.

What a beautiful morning!
Not so by looking to the murky weather outside my window but more for looking on my phone screen :)

Still in bed i cast a glance at my e-mails and there they where!

Cobweb Forest, Book Three of the Cobweb Bride Trilogy is out and i am offered a free copy to do my review thing again :)

Yay!
I am very happy to have a chance to read the sequel so soon after i finished the 2. part . Can't wait to cuddle up and start reading
( sorrowfully not right now, as piles of laundry and some dishwasher unloading have priority).

And the second good news is (it's the second not because is less important or less good but because it was in my inbox a bit later) that i am offered to do a blog tour for
A Draw of Kings by Patrick W. Carr ( by Bethany House Publishers).Yay again!

I am still a very "young" 42 year old blogger and maybe not so very active on the daily basis like some, so i still get exited when offered books and tours freely from publishers, not having to chase after them my self and ask for books to review:)

So,yeah .It's a happy morning and now i am off to make breakfast for my kids, coffee for hubby and me and then..sigh off to the battle with laundry and dishes ;)

(Check in later for some free giveaways as i am kindly offered to share my happiness by sharing some nice books)

Imagine a world where no one is dying.
Yay that's a great idea - you would say at first. But think about it.It's not just that you would become immortal or that your loved ones would never have to depart from you.Think about the sick, think about the old people already on there dying bed...
They wouldn't just jump up, become healed, healthy and young again. No,they would be sentenced to endless suffering with no sleep or rest.Nothing can die.Not the old, dying grandma, not the assassinated beautiful princess, not the little child who fell and hurt it self, not even the pig who was on the slaughter table at the moment when death stopped.Still thinking this is a good idea for a world to be? I think not.But it is how it is.Mr.Death him self decided it is time for him to have a bride, but he cant find her.He doesn't now how she looks like nor where she is but he can feel her somewhere in the world. So he decides to stop doing his job until the bride comes to him.

This is the story that we learn of in the first installment of the Cobweb Bride Trilogy.

In this second sequel we will have the honor to join the journey of Persephone through the land at war against the dead armies,on her way to find the Cobweb Bride.
If i would write any more of it it would have to much spoilers so i'll just say that you can expect to engage a handsome, dark knight;a cute and clever peasant girl by the name of Persephone, some spoiled aristocrats;a funny, heartwarming, middle-aged witch;a clever mare;a noble death princess,an assassin in love and regret, and a lot more beautiful and deeply developed characters that will grow to you and become your best friends and foes.

A worthy sequel if not even better as the first part! Such beautiful and poetic writing... The story starts a bit slow at the beginning but takes a nice turn later on with more romance and action. Some really clever parts like the nature of the Lethe river and the final chapter revelation, where i almost thought-OK this is the end, nice and happy-turned to be a huge surprise and smart cliffhanger. They made me smile and happily think of future hours spend reading the promised third part... hopefully sooner rather then later. Thumbs up dear Vera, for this beautiful sequel and thank you for sending me the book when i asked for it.I am very much recommending this serial and i can't wait to lay my eyes on the third book:)
I was pleasantly surprised by this story.
It was one of the ARC-s i acquired from Netgally and i kind of started reading it more because i am due over to do some reviews then because i was in a reading mode. But the story managed to suck me in right from the beginning (i so love books that don't drag) and kept me interested to the very end.

There isn't much i can say about the summary without doing some major spoilers, so I'll just keep it short.
This is a story about few teenage boys who are awakened on some tropic island with a memory loss.
The main character vaguely remembers his ant calling him Danny Boy so this is how everyone else start calling him. There are weird things happening on the Island and as the story develops more and more is reviled and the suspense and the curiosity will keep you reading deep into the night.
The Characters are very good developed all though i would maybe give Danny few years more then 13 considering his maturity and to the way he responses to all the events that are happening to him.
I am a mother of a 13 year old boy so i couldn't avoid compering. Some things that Danny said were hard to imagine coming from a 13 year old, but on the other hand - he is some kind of genius so maybe he shouldn't be compered to ordinary kids that age :).

I so can see a movie made of this book,it has all the necessity's for a great sf thriller:)

Looking forward to read the next part.

It is the dawn of a new
age... The Industrial Revolution has begun, factories are springing up
across the country, and new technologies are transforming in the cities.
But the old ways do not die easy.

“I was not a bard or a djeli or an historian or a scribe and I was certainly not a sage, but that didn't mean I wasn't curious…”

Young
Cat Barahal thinks she understands the world she lives in and her place
in it, but in fact she is merely poised, unaware, on the brink of
shattering events. Drawn into a labyrinth of politics involving blood,
betrayal and old feuds, she will be forced to make an unexpected and
perilous journey in order to discover the truth, not just about her own
family but about an ancient secret lying at the heart of her world.

Cat
and her cousin Bee are part of this revolution. Young women at college,
learning of the science that will shape their future and ignorant of
the magics that rule their families. But all of that will change when
the Cold Mages come for Cat. New dangers lurk around every corner and
hidden threats menace her every move. If blood can't be trusted, who can
you trust?

From one of the genre's finest writers comes a bold new epic fantasy in which science and magic are locked in a deadly struggle.

Only one thing is certain: when Hallows' Night comes, the Wild Hunt will ride - and it feeds on mortal blood.

Cat
and her cousin Bee are caught in a maze of intrigue, treachery, and
magic. Everyone seems to want something from them: the Cold Mages are
trying to take them prisoner, and the warlord who wants to conquer all
of Europa seems sure they have a special destiny to aid him whether they
want to or not. Worse, hidden powers deep in the spirit world are
rising, and they are the most dangerous of all. Cat must seek allies and
figure out who she can trust in order to save the ones she loves. For
if she doesn't, everything will be lost.
I enjoyed the read. It was a
nice change to the usual fantasy genre i am reading.A fast paced
romance-mystery novel with a drop of paranormal. The only thing that
spoiled it to me and made me give it 3 instead of 4 stars is the ending.
It doesn't solve anything. It leaves you feeling like someone teared out
half the book. It doesn't even feel like the usual cliffhanger..more
like an unfinished chapter. I really don't like when books end this way.
I suppose i wouldn't mind if i had the sequel already at hand but being
as this is the first part and the others are not written yet, it just
leaves me annoyed having to wait who knows how long to find out what
will happen next. And the book is good enough that i will be asking my
self this for some long time.

Short summary:

Two girls are
hold in the attics whole there life.Because one of them is a
uncontrolled fire starter, so it's for the safety of the household. One
day one girl is kidnapped and she finds out unbelievable facts about her
self and her life.
Goodreads summary:
It's customary for
Gothic romance novels to include a mysterious girl locked in the attic.
Hannah Smith just wishes she wasn't that girl. As a narcoleptic and the
companion to an earl's daughter with a strange affliction of her own,
Hannah knows she's lucky to have a roof over her head and food in her
belly when so many orphans starve on the streets. Yet freedom is
something Hannah longs for. She did not, however, want her freedom to
arrive in the form of kidnapping.

Taken by handsome Jack Langley
to a place known as Freak House, she finds herself under the same roof
as a mad scientist, his niece, a mute servant and Jack, a fire starter
with a mysterious past. They assure Hannah she is not a prisoner and
that they want to help her. The problem is, they think she's the earl's
daughter. What will they do when they discover they took the wrong girl?Bonihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01951205969280374263noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3887715181515966586.post-74458553772830505502013-06-16T11:57:00.001+02:002014-04-24T23:44:59.370+02:00Fifth Grave Past the Light (Charley Davidson #5)

Did you ever watch the Tv series Gilmore Girls? Well if you did ,you will know what type of hilarious and funny person Charley Davidson is.Just like Lorelei.I kept imaging her that way.

Ok,so when a friend of mine asked what is this book about and i told her a short summary..it kind of sounded ..cliche-full and stupid..so she looked at me with an raise eyebrow and slowly nodded her head..not very convinced in my good book taste...but she was so wrong :))

Underlying text contains previous books spoilers so don't read it if you haven't read all the books before this one.

So the main character is a girl called Charley Davidson and she is ..well a grim reaper.Actually
she is a portal to heaven ,she can see dead people and they have to cross through her to get to heaven.Sounds lame? Well it isn't :P

She is in love with not less then the..Son of Satan! I know you laugh now..but when you start reading about Reyes..cause that's his name ,your laugh will stuck in your throat and you'll have a heavy breathing problem i can tell you!
So his father is the most beautiful angel to fall from heaven, Lucifer. And Reyes had been created there, by Satan's image , forged in the fires of sin. Hence his allure.

Reyes is Satan’s plan to get out of hell and into heaven. With Charlie and Reyes, he would have a direct door into the very realm he’d been kicked out of.Because Reyes is a portal to hell.

And beside being unearthly beautiful and sexy ... He is a reader!. George R. R. Martin and Tolkien to Ursula Le Guin and Asimov. He has all those books in his apartment Do you need more prove he was made to be loved by us? 10

In stead of killing Charlie and bringing her to Hell and his Father,Reyes falll in love with her and became her protector.Awwwwww.....

That's kind of the core of the series .Everything else is building around this main story .So in every sequel (and there are 5 so far but will be more) we read about a different case Charlie is on ,because she is a private investigator ,her father and uncle are cops and she helps them solving cases. That always include help from death people of course.

But the most entertaining thing is the amazing sense of humor that the writer managed to express almost in every sentence and act Charlie does. You cant stop smiling reading this book.Well only when you are heavy breathing when Reyes comes on the page..:P

It is one of this books you can't let out of your hands and even it has ca 350 pages i managed to finish it in 2 reading nights ( i did suffer of heavy leads and blurry eyes the whole day after mind you) because it was so good .

So go on read it,don't be appealed by the seemingly cliche story..its really all working out perfect :)

Brandon Sanderson never disappointed me!
Yet again he managed to create a beautiful book, with an (again) unique magic system, with very likable and believable characters you can easily connect. The story sucks you inn from the very start. It is about a boy that is different then others, not quite accepted, struggling to tag along because of his lack of magic but anyway a student at a famous magic academy.
I recommend it for all the Harry Potter lovers out there, for all the teens that yearned for something new and exciting and last but not least, for us adults who still have the kid inside:)
Here is a short synopsis from Goodreads:
As the son of a lowly chalk maker at Armedius Academy, Joel can only watch as Rithmatist students study the magical art that he would do anything to practice. Then students start disappearing — kidnapped from their rooms at night, leaving trails of blood. Assigned to help the professor who is investigating the crimes, Joel and his friend Melody find themselves on the trail of an unexpected discovery — one that will change Rithmatics — and their world — forever.
I must admit i expected much more. This book got really high praises
from some of my book friends so i was ,before even starting the book,
so sure this must be a "masterpiece" .
I was very glad to got this
book recommended because as a fantasy lover i very rarely come across
of non-fantasy books that i like.

So i thought: Cool! That's the one i will love..! Cause i didn't read anything worth mentioning after Forbidden so it was about time to add some more titles on my contemporary none-fantasy shelve .

Well..ok back to the book.

This is a love story about teenagers. He is poor and she is rich. Ok..nothing new here.
He is a nice guy,a knight in shiny armor ...not really. He is a bad boy. But girls do fall for that kind of boys..
He
has a little sister and with all his means he tries to keep her with
him, because his mother is gone,he is not an adult yet and the social
services are lurking close to tear the kids apart..

There are few
problems i had with this story . First of all -the Storytelling . The
boy is telling his sister a long story through the whole book. The story
is actually a fantasy version of there real life. The thing is ,the
story never felt like it came from a 17 years old boys mouth...how ever
he is talented.
It was totally out of character. And for me,this
storytelling was very boring.Like reading the Little Prince over and
over again .I understand the story is meant to be full of symbolism and
second meanings, but it gave up to much, it was full of spoilers about
the real events, given away to early...

Then there is my problem
with the love story it self. I never felt in anyway that the boy cared
for the girl. He cared only for his little sister, everything else was
just a mean to keep her save.
He would never come to my list of all
favorite book crushes. There was no chemistry between them.Just a stupid
girl falling in love with a bad boy...Things that he did to her ...well
that would be a spoiler. But even if there probably are disturbed
teenagers who can forgive such a thing i doubt anyone would forgive just
so without a reason for why he did that..

The characters are
good and deep described its just there actions considering the love
between them ,that was to plastic and not believable at all.

It didn't stir any emotions in me (if you wanna cry rather read Forbidden) and i am afraid it will be soon forgotten .

On the other hand this book could be interesting for the younger people with not so much reading and life experience.
The
writer is very talented ,she has a nice melancholic style ,she uses
very beautiful words describing the nature and the surroundings ,i could
easy imagine my self being in some places so vivid they where
described. But it just wasn't enough for me,because i was yearning for
an epic love story and this i didn't got.Bonihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01951205969280374263noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3887715181515966586.post-13302756210855990782013-05-14T02:34:00.004+02:002013-05-14T02:34:39.763+02:00Through the door
I like the Celtic mythology and i think this book has a nice potential to develop into something better in its sequels.
As for book one it didn't quite cope with me,i couldn't connect to the characters,I think they can be explored more as same as there actions,
because some of it wasn't really plausible enough to go with the logic of the story.
But as i mentioned, the theme is great and the idea of the story as well so i am curios will the flaws be worked out in the sequels and expand into something more.
The author made a splandid job by brething animals human intelligence and emotions in.
I liked that too.
I found that The red mark was a very fast and light read, you can savor it easily for one afternoon. It was a bit to short so i had a feeling ,the characters just didnt had enough time to develop particularly complex or deep.
I am curious if the sequel will bring us a bit more of the story and expand the roles and the world into some deeper level.

This is a story how two princesses from rival kingdoms, came together to
be friends. We will learn all about the kingdoms, the politic, the
magic, the romance... through Ailsbet and Marissa's story.

There are two kinds of magic Taweyr and Newyer.
The two kingdoms favor each a different kind.In Rurik it is Taweyr and in Weirland it is Newyer.
Taweyr is the more aggressive magic ,the offensive.
Newyer is the magic of new life creation.

Ailsbet is the only character not feeling flat and plastic. All the others are not well enough developed .
The magic system is different and thus fresh and interesting but the
whole story felt more like a medieval court intrigue romance then a
fantasy novel. There was not enough magic for my taste.
But,it was a
good story and the writing is ok. I must say yes, I saw many flaws in
this book. Nonetheless, I did enjoy it and i am planing to read the
sequel.Bonihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01951205969280374263noreply@blogger.com1
